So what exactly is this “Insanity Workout”?

I told you I am going to write an honest review, so let me keep some of my feelings aside and let me try to focus on facts.

Insanity is a workout created by Shaun T, a very well know fitness professional. It is an EXTREME cardio workout, that incorporates interval training with resistance and plyometrics to get the best results possible within the shortest period of time. This of course, will only happen if you are able to stick with it! (Scroll to the bottom to take my challenge!)

Insanity is indeed an insane workout. When you think that you are done, you realize that what you just did was only the warm up (more on that later). I am not even kidding.

One of the most important facts about Insanity though, is that you won’t use a single dumbbell, resistance band or any other kind of equipment. Shaun T managed to create a workout that will get you ripped by using nothing but your own body as resistance.

What should I expect to get from this workout?

To tell you the truth, if you get through it you will get the best body you have ever had. I am 31 years old now and for the longest I have wanted to have flat abs (hence my name in the wowy.com community flatabsmom… if you are ever there drop me a line). However, because I never really dedicated myself to it, I was never able to get them, till now.

At the time of this writing I am in day 15 and I can already see the results. I have already lost 2″ (update 05.14: 3″) of my waist. Pants that I have not been able to use since I am 23, fit again… yes 15 days! I am in awe and so motivate that I even though waking up at 5:00 AM in the morning to work out is not something I look forward to, I cannot wait for my next workout.

Throughout this entire journey I am posting pictures and videos, so feel free to browse around after reading this post to make sure that this Insanity Workout review site answers all your questions.*** UPDATED 05.07.11 ***I have lost 3″ in 3 weeks!

What are the BAD things about Insanity Workout?

  • Shaun T’s Insanity workout is NOT for everybody. I asked my husband to join me for the first 5 days, thinking that he would love it after trying it…. Well, he didn’t. My husband is not a very athletic person, he never played sports in school, and up until he met me, he really wasn’t that interested in exercise, period. On top of that he feels completely awkward working out in front of a TV. (LOVE YOU BABY!)
  • Insanity workout is an extreme CARDIO workout. If you are into lifting weights, and you actually hate cardio, this may not be for you. Don’t get me wrong, you WILL get results if you follow it but it is going to be harder for you to stick with it. My recommendation, go with P90X instead.

What are the GOOD things about Shaun T’s Insanity Workout?

  • The workouts are never longer than one hour. As I said before, as is I already have to wake up at 5:00 AM to get in my workout, I just don’t have more than 1 hour a day to devote to exercise (baby, husband, work, website, housework…. you get my point).
  • The program is only 60-days long. Oh yeah baby! Two months and I am done. Most other programs are 3 months plus. I will be ready for summer.
  • The Insanity Workout is very fast paced. Because it is set up in an interval training fashion you are done before you know it (except for the first two times when you go “Oh sh#t that was just the warm up!?”)
  • For all the cardio junkies, runners, joggers, and for all current or ex sport players, this is it. I am not that much of a aerobics/dancer and lifting weights has never been my forte. I love running, but it is no longer an option since I had my baby. Insanity is the perfect fit for my needs.

My Overall Opinion

If you are trying to get in shape quickly and safely, and you have some kind of athletic background, then this is the workout for you, but you have to commit to it for 60 days!

It has taken me 31 years to make that commitment and I am wondering why I didn’t do it before. Do you know how much more I would have enjoyed my twenties if I would have had this body? If I would have had this self-steem? If I would have stop making excuses and I would have taken action before?!

If you do not have an athletic background, or you have not exercised in years, then you may want to look for other options. With that said, if you belong to this group and you decide to get Insanity and show me that I am wrong, send me your before and after pictures and I will write a whole addendum in this post showing that I was wrong and that it can be done. I promise!

Seriously, watch my videos. You can see that I am pouring sweat halfway into the warm-up. Insanity is an extreme workout that can transform your body fast!

  7. Hi! Thanks for posting the video and information with your experience using Insanity. You really inspired me as I have a two year old girl and not a lot of time on my hands. I’m two weeks into the Insanity challenge and there’s been a couple days where I’ve missed but made up the very next day. I’m hoping this didn’t throw me off too much. Also I already eat very healthy and can’t afford to buy some of the foods on the meal plan but try to stay in the same order. Do you think this will affect my weight loss? Were there any days you had to miss working out at all due to a time consuming schedule or that you were too tired? Sometimes I’m so tired I just can’t work out. I really want to lose 10 pounds and I feel that would be the best weight for me. So far I have lost two pounds. I’m not really overweight but want to tone up in my tummy and lose my love handles and my thighs need to get a little smaller. Do you think because I’ve only lost two pounds in the two weeks that’s a bad sign I’m not working hard enough? Thanks so much for your help and honesty!

  8. Hi,
Wow, I wish I was that dedicated when I was 14! And yes, I did tape myself everyday for the whole workout :). Congrats and good luck, I am sure you will get in excellent shape!

  9. Hi, thank you for your comment. I really don’t have a diet plan. The only two things I did was to add a bag of SteamFresh veggies to my daily diet, plus I added a Shakeology shake every morning. I hope that helps! I figured that small steps that I can stick with are much better than huge steps I can’t even reach.

    Posted by flatabsmom | September 2, 2011, 1:18 am
  10. Congrats!!! In the next 30 days you are going to see your body change every day! At the end of the 60 days you are not going to believe how much you have accomplished!

    Posted by flatabsmom | September 2, 2011, 1:19 am
  11. Hi Jessica!!! I am so glad that you sent this comment. Trust me you are not alone! I skipped a whole week because I just was too tired. Believe it or not it doesn’t matter as long as you keep going and do it. Do not over stress about doing everything to the T, it won’t make THAT much of a difference and you are going to go nuts. Insanity, just like every other plan are guides, not military strategies lol. Enjoy the workout, enjoy the diet and while you are at it enjoy your life! THE DIET…. the truth is that I didn’t even look a the Insanity Diet, so I have no clue what they recommend. I eat pizza, burgers, cake, pie, cookies, throughout… not only but once in a while. The only two things that I stuck with were: add bag of SteamFresh veggies everyday, plus I had a Shakeology shake every morning, other that those two changes I kept eating and drinking what I was used to eat before.
Losing weight has nothing to do with losing the tummy, the handles and toning the thighs… I only lost 3 lbs through the WHOLE thing, yet you can see the HUGE transformation. Don’t worry so much about the weight, take pictures and see the changes there. If you need anything else, do not hesitate to contact me. Make sure that you login your workouts in WOWY.com for a chance to win $500 a day… and while you are there look me up and send me a friend invite…. my username is flatabsmom.

  15. hi, so i really want to do the insanity challenge. i am a single mom. i already have the insanity workouts. the only thing is there no way for me to afford the shakeology. Money is very tight however i am on food stamps so i can buy health food. If anyone knows of supplements like protein shake or something i can get a the grocery that would help. How important is shakeology? Pleas let me know, there’s just now way for me to buy shakeology.

    Posted by kyndra | February 1, 2012, 6:04 pm
  16. Hi Kyndra,
I am sorry for such late reply.
Don’t worry about Shakeology, it is not ultra necessary. As long as you try to eat better and you follow the exercise routine you will be fine. I know that Shakeology is pricy. It is 100% worth it but if you don’t have the means, just don’t worry about it.
I wish you the in your challenge. Let’s connect on facebook http://facebook.com/workouttobefree

  17. Hi cynthia! I know that it’s been a while since you’ve completed this, I just wanted to know how u were keeping up, I actually plan on starting insanity as soon as today for the second time lol! I found your story to be so amazing and relatable, well I’m only a college student but I’ve been trying to find a workout program that I can really turn into a regular thing and I found that following you throughout your journey was extremely motivating and I can’t wait to begin! I hope you are doing well at maintaining your well earned lean body, I can’t wait to see results in myself. Would you mind updating from time to time, it would be a great motivation if I ever feel like quitting.

    Thanks!
    Koraly.

  19. Hi!
I just completed Day 4 of Insanity and it’s kicking my butt! I had two kids back to back and I’m hoping that this will help me get back into shape. I do have a question though, if you wouldn’t mind answering. Do you know if Insanity will cause thickening of the waist? I want to flatten my tummy but I don’t want it to get wider. If you know anything about this, please let me know.

    Thanks,
    Mary

  20. Hi Mary,
    Congrats!!! Keep on going!
To answer your question… No, Insanity does not cause thickening of the waist. As a matter of fact I lost something like 3 inches off my waist during the program.
Thanks. Visit my new site and FB page eattrainbelieve.com and facebook.com/eattrainbelieve.

  21. How do you keep that motivation to keep doing the workouts? I have started insanity for like a week now, I can see the small changes, but also looking forward to completing the workout. I really have no idea as in how to eat, I just eat watever I can get a hold of and I don’t know if thats helping with the workouts? I’m on disk 2 for like almost two weeks now just because I wanted to get use to it before starting a new workout. Is that good or bad?

    Posted by momof3 | July 26, 2012, 8:19 pm
  22. I think I mistyped my email. So just trying to fix that up. Let me know what you think of my question. I’ll be waiting for your reply. Thanks alot and you are very inspirational.

    Posted by momof3 | July 30, 2012, 8:11 pm
  23. Hi momof3,

I am mom of 1 :). Getting used to the workout is good, IF you are new to working out or just starting to workout again after a long time (year or more).
The workouts are meant to be challenging and you are NOT really supposed to be able to do the whole routine without taking a little break here and there, even the people doing the video have to do so, once in a while.
If you think that you need more time to get comfortable with the workout because you feel that you may get injured then, by all means, keep doing it until you feel more comfortable, but don’t do them so much that you get tired of them. They are meant to be challenging, and they are scheduled in a way that it keeps your body guessing and away from plateaus.
Regarding your diet… The TRUTH is that I am horrible with diets and as soon as I say diet I get an unreal desire to eat junk food all day. So when I did Insanity I tried my best to keep eating what I usually eat, but I added vegetables to every meal and I drank Shakeology.
If you want to get absolutely the best results possible, follow the diet in the manual. Believe in yourself is 50%, Eat clean is 40%, Training hard is 10%.
You can contact me at any time at EatTrainBelieve@gmail.com. or visit my new site eattrainbelieve dot com.
I hope that helped. Keep me posted. :)
